Mike Blatt’s paintings and limited-edition graphics use humor and a sense of play to re-envision America’s most recognized pop culture icons. His latest Betty Boop series captures the sultry innocence of the doe-eyed bombshell, using vivid color to add a fresh edge to an otherwise retro image. He exaggerates the ultra-feminine curves of Betty’s figure, and dresses her in posh ensembles, adding to her ever-present sex appeal. Blatt’s compositions refer to the paintings of Tamara de Lempicka, the prolific painter whose jewel-toned figurative artworks are most closely associated with the art deco movement.
